Big-D Midwest is always thinking of ways to better their community in BIG ways and in small. Each year they partner with a local non-profit, Hearts &amp; Hammers, to volunteer for their annual Day of Service. With the office and field team in attendance, they paint, landscape, repair siding, clean out garages and even repair wheelchair ramps.
Hearts &amp; Hammers puts Big-D Midwest in touch with owners who need their assistance to restore their homes. Sharon was a previous homeowner and said, “I am just so thankful for the work that Big-D Construction did on my house. It took such a weight off my shoulders.”
Employee Jesse Sherman has been spearheading this collaboration for the last few years. He says, “It feels so good to give back to our community and have the opportunity to put my skills to use.”

Big-D Construction Utah Locations Named “Top Workplaces” by The Salt Lake Tribune

Phase 3 of the Salt Lake City International Airport is officially taking off, thanks to our Big-D Construction team and partners at Holder Construction (HDJV).
Phase 3 marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to transform the airport into a world-class travel hub, and showcases the hard work, dedication, and teamwork of everyone involved.
The centerpiece of Phase 3 is the Central Tunnel, a critical connector between Concourses A and B, which significantly reduces walking distance for passengers.
This tunnel isn’t just functional; it’s also a visually stunning space, thanks to the inclusion of The River Tunnel—a remarkable art installation by Gordon Huether. The installation reflects Utah’s beautiful river systems, offering travelers a unique experience as they pass through. The vibrant, water-inspired visuals give the tunnel a sense of place that resonates with both locals and visitors, underscoring the connection between the airport and Utah’s natural beauty.
In addition to the tunnel, a special feature connects the airport’s design to Utah’s history. A life-sized replica of Allosaurus, Utah’s state fossil, now stands proudly in the airport. This is more than just a decorative piece; it reflects a commitment to incorporating elements of local culture into the project.
This installation is especially meaningful, as it not only highlights Utah’s rich history but also our own, bringing together two key projects completed by our teams—the airport and the Natural History Museum—showcasing how our efforts have come full circle in a way that celebrates both spaces.
“Finding a prominent spot for the Allosaurus allowed us to connect the project to Utah’s rich history and the Natural History Museum,&#8221; said Leon Nelson, Vice President. &#8220;It’s especially meaningful to incorporate something so unique into the airport and have Big-D play a role in adding this local touch.”
Another standout feature is the installation of a restored world map that had long been part of the original airport terminal. The map, which holds a special place in the airport’s history, has been carefully restored and reinstalled in the new terminal. It’s a reminder of how the airport connects Utah to the world and how our work honors the past while building for the future.
“The culmination of two years of hard work, coordination, and teamwork is what you see here today,&#8221; said Park Madsen, Senior Superintendent. &#8220;I’m proud of everyone who put in their time and dedication over the last two years. It’s a testament to what we can accomplish when we work together toward a common goal.”
Beyond the tunnel and art installations, this phase also introduces new concessions, offering passengers a mix of local and national dining and retail options. These additions not only elevate the passenger experience but also solidify the airport&#8217;s status as a leading hub in global travel. The new concessions reflect the airport’s focus on catering to both the needs of travelers and the local community.
We take great pride in our HDJV team in this transformative project. This success is a direct reflection of the dedication and expertise of our teams. Phase 3 stands as a clear example of how we continue to deliver excellence on a large scale.

Big-D Construction Recognized as Certified Business of Kindness

Last week, teams across Big-D Companies joined the industry in recognizing Construction Safety Week 2025. This year’s theme, “All In Together”, emphasized how safety depends on each of us planning ahead, owning our responsibility, and committing fully to protecting one another.
Throughout the week, our jobsite teams took time to engage in focused conversations around hazards, safe planning practices, and the importance of speaking up. Across Big-D, teams participated in a national stand-down, reinforcing our commitment to fall prevention alongside OSHA’s nationwide effort. That event was just one part of a larger recognition of National Safety Stand-Down Month, a reminder that fall hazards remain the leading cause of fatalities in construction and that constant vigilance saves lives.
Construction Safety Week gave us a chance to pause and reflect on what it truly means to build safely. We celebrated individuals who set the standard on site, strengthened our team’s awareness, and renewed our culture of safety that reaches far beyond this one week.

Big-D Companies Celebrates Construction Safety Week 2025

Big-D Companies annual Big-D Fair was packed with sunshine, great food, games, and plenty of fun for all ages. From check-in to the final raffle prize, the day was a full celebration of the people who make Big-D so special.
Associates and their families explored every corner of the fairgrounds, from the dunk tank and face painting to bounce houses, mini golf, and more. Live music kept the energy up while kids and grown-ups alike got in on the action with lawn games, giveaways, and hands-on activities. Lunch was served hot and fresh from local food trucks, with everything covered by Big-D to show our appreciation.
This year’s 5K brought out 226 participants and some impressive performances. Congratulations to our top finishers:

Big-D Construction Tempe, AZ Office Wins Tempe Business Excellence Award

Every May, construction teams across the country pause to focus on one of the most important topics on any jobsite: fall prevention. This year, Big-D teams embraced National Safety Stand Down all month long by taking time to reflect, reset, and recommit to keeping each other safe.
Crews across our business units held stand downs to have open conversations about hazards, fall protection, and the importance of personal responsibility. Led by superintendents, safety leaders, project managers, and field crews, these gatherings were opportunities to share experiences, ask questions, and reinforce that safety starts with awareness and accountability.
Whether reviewing harness inspections, discussing past incidents, or focusing on communication and planning, every team leaned into the chance to learn and reflect. No matter the location, the message was clear: when we make time to talk about safety, we strengthen our culture and our teams.
Falls remain the leading cause of death in construction. National Safety Stand Down is a nationwide initiative that encourages teams to focus on fall prevention through training, equipment, and planning. These conversations are already part of our daily routine, but this month offered a powerful reminder to dig deeper.

Since joining Big-D in 2007, Jared has built an impressive track record rooted in consistency, quality, and leadership. He brings nearly two decades of construction experience and has spent the last 11 years serving in project management roles, including Project Director. From distribution centers and office buildouts to tenant improvements, retail spaces, along with extremely complex manufacturing facilities. Jared has helped shape some of our most complex and high-profile projects across the region.
Known for his ability to keep projects on track and within budget, Jared works closely with owners, architects, and subcontractors to ensure every job exceeds contract requirements and Big-D’s standards for excellence. His project portfolio includes over 35 large-scale warehouse and distribution facilities, including extensive work for some of our best clients such as Freeport West, Hamilton Partners, JL Properties, and Riverbend Management along with Business Depot Ogden and multiple Swire Coca-Cola facilities across the West.

The project team delivered a high performing, sustainable facility while navigating long lead times and winter weather.
Salt Lake City School District Administrative Building 
Category: K-12 Facilities Over $5 Million 
The new 172,701 sqft headquarters replaces an aging building and creates a flexible, future ready space for leadership and community services. Features include a rooftop solar array, dynamic glass, preserved legacy trees, and long lasting interior finishes. The team maintained schedule despite one of the snowiest winters on record through proactive sequencing and coordination.
Layton Ambulatory Surgical Center 
Category: Healthcare Over $5 Million 
This 20,545 sqft outpatient facility sits adjacent to Intermountain Layton Hospital and includes four operating rooms, recovery spaces, and high performance HVAC and sterilization systems. Warm wood tones, layered lighting, and biophilic finishes support a healing environment. The team delivered over $700,000 in value engineering savings while overcoming significant equipment delays.
Copper Crossing 7 
Category: Industrial Manufacturing Warehouse Over $2 Million 
Located in West Jordan, Copper Crossing 7 is a 159,600 sqft speculative warehouse built for flexibility and speed to market. The tilt up structure features a 32 ft clear height, ESFR sprinkler system, and dock and grade level doors. Despite concrete supply shortages, the team found alternate vendors to keep the schedule intact and completed the project with zero recordable incidents.
Box Elder Public Safety Building 
Category: Public Works Over $2 Million 
This 33,387 sqft facility consolidates fire, police, EMS, and dispatch services for Brigham City and Box Elder County. The site also includes a fire training tower, generator, and fueling station. With a winter start and a late guaranteed maximum price, the team worked closely with the owner to deliver a secure, functional, and cost-effective facility for first responders and the public. 

In addition to our projects, we were awarded the ABC STEP Award &#8211; Silver Level and Utah Labor Commission Workplace Safety Award.

He has held roles ranging from estimating to division and regional management, developing valuable insights into the project cycle and contributing to the growth of teams under his leadership. Grady’s focus on project systems and controls, pre-construction cost analysis, and value partnerships has consistently helped his teams reach high levels of functionality and profitability.
Before joining Big-D, Grady was President of his company Lonigan Co., a consultancy specializing in concrete construction management. At Lonigan Co., he provided strategic guidance for complex projects, working with clients to identify innovative solutions to construction challenges while enhancing productivity and safety. In addition to his leadership experience, Grady also served as the Country Manager for STEN Formwork Systems, where he led efforts to bring advanced concrete forming solutions to the U.S. market. This role involved adapting and introducing new formwork technologies, contributing to significant process improvements across multiple projects.
As Director of Operations for PIKUS3D, Grady spearheaded efforts to develop market strategies for emerging concrete additive manufacturing technology. This role further showcased his commitment to innovation, where he explored cutting-edge methods to improve concrete construction processes. His experience as Director of Self-Perform Concrete for Swinerton Builders in the Orange County and LA region involved leading large-scale commercial concrete projects, highlighting his versatility and deep understanding of self-perform concrete. His work at Baker Concrete Construction as a Pre-Construction Manager, where he specialized in estimating and business development, rounded out his expertise in cost control, resource management, and pre-construction planning.

To support our continued success and leadership in this dynamic market, we are excited to announce the promotion of Trevor Hunsaker to President of our Lindon Business Unit, which includes our Idaho Falls office.
Trevor has been an integral part of Big-D for nearly two decades, demonstrating leadership, dedication, and a strong commitment to excellence. With more than 32 years of experience in higher education, healthcare, commercial office, and industrial construction, he has played a vital role in delivering high-quality projects and fostering lasting client relationships. Since joining Big-D in 2007, Trevor has exemplified the values that define our company.

Building things has always interested Trevor, making it natural for him to pursue a degree in Construction Management from BYU—an interest shared by three of his brothers. After graduating, he worked for a small general contractor and later for one of Big-D’s direct competitors before the opportunity to join the Lindon team presented itself. Looking back, he considers that decision one of the best of his career. Over the years, Trevor has tackled a diverse range of projects, from complex Federal and Heavy Industrial work to Medical, Higher Education, and Temple construction. Some of the projects he is most proud to have been a part of include the Kennecott Truck Shop, The Long Canyon Mine Project, and the BYU Music &amp; Arts Buildings.
Perhaps more exciting than building structures is building teams and creating opportunities for career growth within our organization. Trevor has played a key role in establishing new offices in Idaho Falls and St. George, helping strong leaders grow those markets. With significant revenue growth in recent years, the Lindon Group—including Idaho Falls—is on track to reach nearly $300 million in 2025.

Bryan Dunn has officially joined our team as Senior Vice President of Big-D Construction Southwest. Bryan brings with him a wealth of leadership experience and a deep commitment to excellence in both project execution and team development.
With over two decades of experience leading construction companies across Arizona and California, Bryan’s career has focused on cultivating business growth and strategic expansion. At W.E. O’Neil Construction Company of Arizona, where he served as President, Bryan led Arizona’s regional offices in Phoenix and Tucson, doubling the company’s revenue over three years and expanding into affordable housing, senior living, aviation, and higher education.
Previously, he was the Market Sector Executive at Kitchell Construction, where his efforts helped diversify the company into key sectors, securing over $270 million in contracts. At Adolfson &amp; Peterson Construction, he held both Senior Vice President and Vice President of Preconstruction roles, responsible for expanding the company’s Southwest region and integrating sustainability initiatives.
Bryan’s influence reaches beyond operational milestones. He’s recognized for his ability to mentor emerging leaders and has been a guest speaker on topics such as market growth and work-life balance through the Arizona Builders Alliance Leadership Development Forum. His past achievements have earned him both individual and team recognition, with awards like the Phoenix Business Journal’s Top Places to Work and Engineering News Record’s 20 Under 40 in Commercial Construction.

Big-D’s Inaugural Week of Giving Fights Hunger and Builds Community

The 90,000 sq. ft. Juniper Building will serve as the anchor to all of the ongoing efforts, especially as new buildings emerge and new students join in the excitement at the Herriman Campus.
“If you build it, they will come.”
The field of dreams in question turned into the Juniper Building, while &#8220;they&#8221; are the 1,000 students coming and going to classes this semester. Those students doubled the expected enrollment in year one at the Herriman Campus—the ongoing joint venture between Salt Lake Community College and the University of Utah to provide Utah’s South Valley students easier access to education and a seamless transition between the college’s two-year and university’s four-year programs.
Modern tech features in the many class and breakout rooms will advance remote and e-learning opportunities—all to promote each school’s desire to bring a higher education opportunities to potential students across the state. From functions like those, to form, where copper-colored terracotta panels and rammed earth walls tie the building design from ajc architects perfectly to place, with the copper mine and Oquirrh foothills visible just west of the site’s first structure.

They hosted a thank-you meeting for our subcontractors to celebrate 3,000 safe working hours while preparing new subcontractor teams on communication and job site expectations as work progresses across the 19-acre site.
Said Donovan, our Project Manager about the meeting, “It gives us an opportunity to get to know each individual worker on-site and build trust between the Big-D management staff and subcontractors. Trust and respect are what make the most successful projects.”

Big-D Construction Pacific Builders Office Celebrates 3,000 Safe Hours at Yucaipa Logistics Center

Congratulations to Galloway &amp; Company, Inc., City of St. George, and our Big-D St. George team—we&#8217;re excited to watch St. George City Hall emerge from the red rocks!
Back when the existing City Hall finished in 1980, 100 full-time employees served a population of just over 13,000 residents. How the city has grown since then! Today, well over 1,000 full- and part-time employees serve the 100,000-plus residents that call St. George home.
The building looks back to the past, namely its address at 61 Main Street giving a historical nod to when pioneers settled the area in 1861. But most importantly, the building looks forward to helping meet the current and future needs of St. George. When construction finishes in early 2025, employees and residents will be able to enjoy the 69,500-sq. ft. City Hall and the neighboring four-story parking garage in the heart of the city.
As the current City Hall has served admirably for over 40 years, Mayor Michelle Randall hinted at how she hoped future residents would see the new building. &#8220;In another 50 or 60 years, I hope our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will say ‘This City Hall served us well.’”

Big-D Construction Builds New St. George City Hall to Serve 100,000+ Residents by 2025

Teamwork makes the dream work, especially when getting 37,000 pounds of pipe systems from floor to ceiling.
Out in Burley, Idaho, Big-D National Food &amp; Beverage’s Project Suntado has involved the highest levels of coordination work—prefabrication, transportation, assembly—to prepare the project for the “Burley Big Boost,” when 35 team members lifted a 37,000-pound pipe rack assembly via 23 brand new chain hoists. The process of raising the rack and piping from the ground to the 40-foot-high final place took approximately six hours.
Old-fashioned muscle was a unique way the team put safety first as they met the demands of the project schedule. By working off the slab instead of 40 feet up in the air, minimizing labor hours, and focusing on quality control assurance, the lift was a success—and earned high praise from Suntado LLC Co-Owner Dirk Reitsma as he and his company look to provide consumers with shelf-stable milk, or milk that requires no refrigeration.

When Big-D Construction launched its Heavy Industrial business unit a year ago, it did so with the goal of being a leader in the advanced mining and manufacturing space.
As it celebrates its 1-year anniversary, Big-D Heavy Industrial has flourished with global brand experience and a collective, integrated approach to managing the transition from construction to operations. Its team members have proven to be the best in the business.

Joining Allinson on the leadership team is Kyle Sargent, PE, Director of Preconstruction. Sargent earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Arizona State University and an MBA from Louisiana State University. Allinson holds a bachelor of science degree construction management from Northern Arizona University.
From site preparation to process plant facilities, Big-D Heavy Industrial offers advanced construction solutions with safety as a priority and a steadfast knowledge of the business. Team members combined have more than 200 years of experience with global brands including Bayer Industries and MP Materials.
In the past year Big-D Heavy Industrial has displayed industry prowess in mineral water, waste water, reclamation, refineries, smelters, leach pads, concentrators, and process plants.

Big-D Construction Named Contractor of the Year at ABC Utah Excellence Awards 2022

Big-D Construction was the host of one of the NAWIC Salt Lake Chapter events this last week.

Saturday March 11th, we had a brunch with just a handful of women in construction, at the Big-D Construction Salt Lake City Utah Office. 
We are excited to see this engagement and momentum as work is done to promote the success of women in the industry!

Big-D Construction was honored to play a key role in the transformation of Raising Cane’s in Midvale, Utah—now famously known as Project Pink, a one-of-a-kind restaurant personally designed by global music icon Post Malone. Located at 890 Fort Union Blvd in Midvale, UT, this location has become a standout destination not just for chicken lovers, but for fans of bold design and creative collaboration.
On April 13th, the revamped restaurant was unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by both Post Malone and Todd Graves (Founder of Raising Cane&#8217;s). The event drew fans, media, and community members eager to see the artist’s personal touch on the space.
Whether you&#8217;re stopping by for a box combo or just want to experience the vibe of a restaurant designed by Post Malone himself, Project Pink is a must-see.

The University of Utah&#8217;s College of Architecture and Planning runs a program for architecture students ( @designbuildbluff )to design and construct buildings for indigenous families in Bluff, UT.
Big-D Construction was able to donate a very specific truck to transport materials to build homes for the Rural and Native communities of San Juan County in the Utah Four Corners.

SiteKick has a large menu of services that allows us to become more cutting edge.”
This January, SiteKick ventured out to a few of Big-D’s projects across the Twin Cities to observe their technology in action and hear directly from our Big-D Construction team how they utilize SiteKick’s software. “It helps me know what’s going on at my site,” says one Superintendent. “I don’t have to drive there on days off to know the job site is safe and secure.” He elaborates off camera.

Big-D Construction Enhances Jobsite Security with SiteKick Technologies

We had two associates from Big-D Construction participate in the State Capitol Day by advocating for specific bills that have an impact on mental health and suicide prevention.

Two Big-D Construction associates recently participated in Utah’s State Capitol Day, advocating for legislation focused on mental health and suicide prevention. Standing alongside partners from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), LiveOn, and SafeUT, they helped amplify the importance of these critical issues.
During the event, they met with Senator Daniel Thatcher, a key figure behind SB 175—the legislation that established Utah’s suicide crisis line. 
“Suicide deeply affects the construction industry, which is why it’s vital for us to speak up,” shared one associate. “We wore our Big-D vests proudly, but we were there representing the entire industry.”
Big-D encourages everyone to take action, support mental health initiatives, and be part of the change—because every voice matters.

Big-D Construction Advocates for Mental Health at Utah Capitol Day

Big-D Companies strives to be engaged within communities. Part of who we are and how we do business is giving back and today we had the opportunity to present a check with @agcutah to the Utah Food Bank.
Our COO at Big-D Companies, Troy Thompson, recently served as a Chairman on the AGC of Utah Board. He wanted the AGC to consider donating to the @utahfoodbank organization.
Today the Utah Foodbank was presented a spectacular donation. The check was written for nearly $36,000, which will provide about 161,000 meals.
We are grateful for the opportunity that we have to interact and donate to great causes within our communities.

BIG high five to our BIG-D Midwest team in Saint Paul, Minnesota! This amazing group volunteered their time and skills to give back to the community through the non-profit, Hearts &amp; Hammers.
Through this annual day of service, Big-D associates help restore the exterior of a home for neighbors who often face the reality of losing the place they love.
This year – Big-D Midwest restored the outside of a home for a 74-year-old surviving spouse of a U.S. Navy veteran.

Big-D Construction St. Paul, MN Office Volunteers with Hearts & Hammers

In partnership with the Associated Builders and Contractors, Utah Chapter, Big-D Construction spent annual time with Utah Royal Kids of greater Salt Lake.
A religious organization, Utah Royal Kids exists to provide opportunities for children in the foster care system by creating positive, life-changing moments for innocent children who have been victims of neglect, abuse, and abandonment.
With support from ABC members, including Big-D Construction, children were presented with clothes, toys, fun activities, and food, including sweet treats from the Big-D ice cream truck. In return, our Big-D family members who volunteered their time, along with other ABC members, received gratitude, a fun-filled program the children prepared, and an opportunity to give back to the community.
“Participating in the Royal Kids event is truly a win-win for both the kids and ABC members. It is both humbling and gratifying to see the kids’ faces light up upon receiving ice cream and other gifts donated by supporters like Big-D, and I am grateful to be a part of a company that believes in giving back,” said Jim Allison, Big-D Salt Lake Vice President, and ABC Board Member.

Big-D Construction and ABC Utah Join Royal Kids for a Day of Joy

A day of giving to benefit the 2022 Special Olympics turned into much more after Big-D Midwest purchased sub sandwiches for their team and discovered the cause unwrapped a few personal connections. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
“My son Luke is 30 years old. He has a cognitive impairment; he was born six weeks early, and his lungs weren’t developed, which caused oxygen deprivation in his brain. He started doing the special Olympics when he was 11-years-old. He excels at sports, and he loves doing it!” said Sr. Superintendent Patrick Rodgers for Big-D Midwest.
Each year participating Jersey Mike’s Subs donates 100% of their daily profits to benefit the Special Olympics USA Games and Special Olympics state Programs. Nationwide, a full day of sales brings in an estimated $10 million – to charity. This year, Big-D Midwest jumped in on the national fundraiser and sent a companywide email treating associates to lunch.
“It touched me that Big-D would offer all of us sandwiches for this event Jersey Mike’s puts on and I just want to say thank you from me and my son because it helps him continue going on,” said Rodgers who has been with Big-D Midwest for four years. Throughout his 38-year construction career, Rodgers worked hard to care for and create a comfortable life for his son and the Special Olympics brought out a passion in Luke for floor hockey, baseball, and basketball.
“I was a single dad, so seeing him get physical was cool, and he loves sports. It’s very exciting to watch him play!” said Rodgers.
“If you ever have a chance to witness one of the events the Special Olympics has, I highly recommend doing so. Participants, like my son Luke, look forward to every event so they can play and socialize with others. They do not know the meaning of losing!” said Rodgers.
Jersey Mikes changes their charity each year, and Big-D Midwest continues to participate and support the event.

Big-D St. Paul, MN Office Supports Special Olympics Through Jersey Mike’s Day of Giving

Make-A-Wish had a lasting impression on Lauryn Greenwald and her family not too long ago, and they&#8217;ve been paying it forward ever since.
Lauryn, a Sr. Project Administrator at Big-D Construction’s St. Paul, MN office said shortly after her son Christian had been diagnosed with cancer, the foundation granted him his wish in 2016; to meet popular YouTubers “Rhett and Link.” As Lauryn puts it, the entire experience was “just awesome.”
Not only did Christian get to meet a couple of his favorite online stars, but he and his family were treated in true Hollywood fashion with a flight to Los Angeles, and limo service from the airport to their Southern California hotel. Lauryn describes it as a “cushy stay in a super fancy resort.”  The VIP treatment didn’t stop there, the family then received special passes allowing them to jump the lines on all the rides at Universal Studios like real stars! “It was just amazing,” Lauryn recalls. “It was like the best thing and my kids still talk about it today.”​​​​​​​
For Christian, the day became a cherished memory for the rest of his life until he passed away in 2018. To pay it forward, and help other children have a similar experience, Lauryn’s family became involved with the Minnesota Chapter’s Walk for Wishes event.
The fundraiser, which gives participants the choice of either a 5K run or a mile-long walk, raises money for Make-A-Wish. In Christian’s honor, the family has named their fundraising team “Christian Cancer Swag,” the name Christian chose when he was the grandmaster of the event in 2017. This last month, the Christian Cancer Swag team did quite well, coming in third place for money raised this year.
As a sign of support, Big-D St. Paul, MN matched the value Lauryn and her family raised. To Lauryn, the gesture alone was priceless.
“It’s above and beyond,” said Lauryn. “I’ve never worked for any company before that has ever cared about me and supported me in my personal life. I think that’s probably pretty rare.”
Big-D St. Paul, MN office continues to support Lauryn and Make A Wish each year, and is very happy to do so.
